Composite veneers: the gentler, cheaper option

Tooth-coloured resin shaped straight onto your teeth. Often little or no drilling, a short trip and a lower price, in exchange for more upkeep.

Short answer

Composite veneers are tooth-coloured resin bonded and shaped directly onto the tooth, usually with little or no enamel removed. With us they cost £125 per tooth and take 2 to 3 nights in Antalya. In our experience they stain and chip more easily than porcelain and need polishing or repair sooner.

What composite veneers are

Composite is the tooth-coloured filling material dentists use every day. For a composite veneer, the dentist bonds it to the front of the tooth and sculpts it by hand, layer by layer, then polishes it. The Oral Health Foundation lists composite as one of the two usual materials for veneers, alongside porcelain.

Because it's added rather than fitted, composite often needs little or no drilling. That's its biggest advantage.

Who composite suits

  • Small chips, worn edges and small gaps
  • People who want to keep as much natural tooth as possible
  • A lower budget, or a "trial" before deciding on porcelain

It suits less well if you grind your teeth heavily, or want a big change in colour across many teeth.

Upkeep to expect

Composite picks up stains from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking more readily than porcelain, and edges can chip. Most of this can be polished or repaired by a dentist, including in the UK. Good daily cleaning and regular check-ups help either material last longer. See looking after veneers.

Common questions

Do composite veneers damage your teeth?

Composite usually needs little or no drilling, which is why many dentists see it as the gentler option. That also makes it easier to change your mind later.

How long do composite veneers last?

They can last for years with good care, but in our experience they need polishing, touch-ups or repairs sooner than porcelain. A UK dentist can usually repair composite.

Composite or porcelain: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. Composite is cheaper, quicker and kinder to the tooth; porcelain keeps its colour and shine longer. For small chips and gaps composite is often enough.

Can composite veneers be whitened?

No. Whitening only lightens natural teeth, so whiten first if you want a lighter shade, then match the composite to it.

Send us a few photos of your smile. A dentist looks at them and tells you plainly whether you need veneers, crowns, whitening, bonding, or nothing at all.
